magnesium, the mighty mineral

Magnesium. One of my favorite minerals! It’s a very abundant mineral and is needed for over 500 different reactions in the body. This is probably why the majority of us are magnesium deficient because not only is it the first mineral to be depleted with stress and anxiety, but it is also needed for so many processes in the body.

Magnesium is needed for:

  • 500+ enzymatic reactions

  • cellular metabolism

  • blood sugar regulation

  • energy production

  • nervous system regulation

  • stress support

  • gut motility + healthy microbiome

  • immune system modulation

  • DNA repair, replication + transcription

  • relaxtion of the muscles

  • heart health

  • inflammation reduction

  • proper cell membrane permeability

  • detoxification

  • hormone production

  • mast cell + histamine support

Uffda! That is quite the list and that’s not even everything magnesium is needed for!

If you are wondering if you need magnesium, I’m here to tell you that you probably do because it is the very first mineral your body uses up when it is under stress. And who isn’t feeling stressed these days?!

Being low in magnesium can cause (just to name a few):

  • PMS

  • depression

  • osteo-arthritis

  • osteoporosis

  • HPA axis dysfunction + adrenal insufficiency

  • hypothyroidism

  • anxiety

  • hyperactivity

  • excessive sweating

  • epilepsy

  • noise sensitivity

  • hypertension + cardiovascular disease

  • reduced glutathione levels + increased oxidative stress

  • mitochondrial damage

  • decreased immune cell function + increase Epstein-Barr activation

  • eclampsia

However, we don’t recommend supplements based on symptoms alone. Why guess when you can test?!

Magnesium is an intracellular mineral, which means that 99% of the magnesium in our bodies are inside the cell and only 1% is outside the cell. So checking magnesium levels on a blood test doesn’t really give us much information since it’s only addressing 1% which is why I love checking magnesium and other minerals with HTMA (hair tissue mineral analysis) tests.

If you want to know you’re specific mineral needs and how your body responds to stress, we would love to work with you!
